At the beginning of your weight loss or body composition journey, it is important to eat little to no carbohydrates or sugar in order to get into the state we call “ketosis” or as close to it as possible. This is the state in which we are forcing the body to burn fat as fuel rather than sugar to lose fat and change your body composition. Increasing your lean body mass while decreasing fat will not only allow you to look better in your own skin: but, it will also improve blood pressure, insulin resistance, cholesterol levels, mood, sleep, energy levels and you may even wean off some of the medicines you are now taking. Your weight is not necessarily our determining factor, it is the body composition overall in which you look leaner because you have more dense muscle and less fat all over your body. A person can actually weight more but drop overall size just by replacing fat weight with lean muscle weight.
There are many plans you may have heard of in which we use the body’s physiology to force it to lose the unwanted fat all over the body. You may have heard of the Atkins plan or the HCG plan or other plans like the ketogenic diet, in which getting a person into a state of ketosis ultimately helps them to obtain their goals. Many people have been successful on these plans but we feel they are too limited in either calories or variation in diet and could be hard for many patients to stick with.
At the Sharpless Wellness Center, we believe that no two people are alike, and that optimizing weight loss is a complex process in which many variables within the human body must be in synergy to have positive outcomes. We draw blood to understand levels of hormones that can contribute to weight gain. If we do not correct the underlying hormonal balance, losing weight will be like hitting your head against a wall – you will work and work towards a goal that is physiologically attainable. We will discuss the role of some of the hormones produced within your body which can contribute to overall health later.
We give you nutritional support to correct the underlying deficiencies as well as to improve insulin sensitivity, modulate cortisol, improve leptin resistance, improve metabolism, reduce cravings, increase energy and use fat for fuel. We include these safe nutraceuticals as part of your package because we have researched the science behind them and want to help you optimize success with proven treatment modalities that are safe and non addictive.
We give various monthly or weekly injections as part of our package which are catered to your individual needs. These injections include amino acids that help regulate fat burning, liver detoxification and metabolism as well as various B vitamin shots to improve your body’s own ability to lose fat.
It is important for each patient to learn portion size and eat more small meals throughout the day rather that starve themselves and eat larger portions once or twice a day. If portion control is a problem and a patient has a high BMI (calculation for severity of overweight/obesity) with no underlying cardiovascular issues, we may give short term compounded prescriptions to aid in appetite and craving control as well as stimulate fat breakdown, metabolism and elimination. An EKG and blood pressure checks are included in our plan to monitor safety of prescriptions specified by the physician.
